Published March 1, 2019 EVERETT — Stephen D. Bowman, 53, passed away at his home in Everett on February 18, 2019. Stephen was born and raised in Melrose, graduated from Melrose High School, lived most of his life in Melrose and the past 20 years in Everett. Mr. Bowman was a professional drummer by trade, playing in several bands throughout his life. He also worked for several recording studios in the Boston area, playing the drums for bands coming to the studio to record their music. Music was Stephen’s life, whether it was recording music, playing music, or attending concerts, especially “Yes” concerts. He was also a diehard New England Patriots fan. He loved all of his brothers and sisters, nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews, family members and friends. Stephen is survived...

Home, condo prices fell here last month...

Published March 1, 2019 MELROSE — Bucking a state trend, single-family home and condo sale prices fell here last month from where they were a year ago, according to a report released this week. Massachusetts single-family home and condominium prices reached all-time highs for the month of January. However, sales volume plunged by double digits last month to a four-year low, according to a new report from The Warren Group, publisher of Banker & Tradesman. That was not the case in Melrose, where 13 single-family homes sold for an average median price of $602,500. In January of 2018, six houses sold for an average price of $653,000. Last month, there were 3,230 total sales recorded in Massachusetts, a 10.2 percent decline from January 2018 when there were 3,626 transactions. This marked the fewest number of transactions...

Weather blamed in single-vehicle crash on Franklin Street...

Due to space limitations in the print version of our paper this week, we were unable to run much police news. Here it is in its entirety. Published March 1, 2019 MELROSE — Weather was a factor in a single-vehicle crash on Franklin Street late Wednesday night, February 20. A woman driving a 2003 Acura east on Franklin in the vicinity of Walton Park slid in the snow and struck a Verizon utility pole, which broke in two and partially pulled down poles on the other side of the street as a result. Also damaged was a city speed radar sign. Verizon personnel, a tow truck operator, local police, firefighters and Stoneham officers all responded to the area. The woman was taken to MelroseWakefield Hospital.
