MELROSE — The City of Melrose announces that its electricity supply program, Melrose Community Power (MCP), has been renewed. MCP is a group purchasing program, operated by the City since 2019, which provides electricity supply options to help residents and businesses manage costs and increase renewable energy use.

Current participants in Melrose Community Power do not need to take any action to remain in the MCP program and receive the new pricing. Melrose’s new pricing takes effect starting on your November 2024 meter read. All Melrose prices will be lower than National Grid’s current residential Basic Service prices.

According to a release from City Hall, “Our current pricing has been fixed since November 2021, providing multiple years of price stability. Since its launch, the Program has collectively saved $11,710,700 for the community, or $1,265 per average residential customer, compared to National Grid’s supply cost. The Program has also provided cleaner electricity, sourcing voluntary renewables from New England-based Class I sources. These voluntary purchases now amount to 6,545 megawatt hours (MWh) annually, avoiding 4,962,000 pounds of carbon pollution each year.

“‘Keeping electricity prices low and reducing our carbon impact is a win-win for Melrose residents and businesses,’ said Mayor Jen Grigoraitis. ‘Unlike independent competitive supply programs, which often offer confusing packages via aggressive sales tactics, MCP is a safe and reliable way for Melrosians to save on power costs with the backing of City Hall.’

“The City’s current electricity contract has offered fixed prices since November 2021, providing multiple years of price stability. As electricity costs increase across New England and the nation, the program provides a stable rate to Melrose customers for the next 3 years.

“MCP rates only apply to the Supply portion of your electric bill and take effect on your meter read date. National Grid will continue to set the charges on the Delivery on your electric bill and will repair outages and manage all billing. MCP has no impact on any solar benefits, low- income discounts, or budget billing plans. Income-eligible customers can receive a 32% discount on their entire electricity bill, including the MCP prices above. This sign up is done through the utility, National Grid.

“If you are not currently participating in MCP, you can join any time. To join, submit a request at MCP.CityofMelrose.org.

MCP participants may leave the Program at any time without penalty and return to Basic Service supply with National Grid. To leave the Program, call National Grid at (800) 322- 3223, or submit a request at MCP.CityofMelrose.org.”
