Avid readers who loved crafts and knitting

MELROSE — Janet R. (Gormady) Hanlon of Melrose, formerly of Somerville passed away on September 17 at the age of 81. She was born on April 17, 1943 to the late Margaret (Brundige) and William J. Gormady in Cambridge. Janet was raised in Somerville and graduated from Somerville High School in 1961, moved to Stoneham in 1978 and remained there for most of her life before moving to Melrose in 2015. She worked as an accountant for Capital Carpet & Flooring in Woburn for many years.

Janet was a member of the Red Hat Society in Stoneham, the First Congregational Church in Melrose and the Circle Four Club at the church. She also volunteered at the Stoneham Theatre and Winchester Hospital. Janet loved crafts, particularly knitting and sewing, was an avid reader and always looked forward to her senior citizen trips.

Janet was the beloved mother of Todd Hanlon and his wife Jennifer of Stoneham. Loving grandmother of Jaime Hanlon of Stoneham. Caring sister of Marlene Sachs and her late husband Alan of Wakefield and George Gormady and his wife Susan of Woburn. She is also survived by a niece, several nephews, relatives, friends and her cat Sheldon.

Visiting Hours were held on Monday, September 23 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St., Melrose. A graveside prayer service was held following the visiting hours at Puritan Lawn Cemetery, 185 Lake St., Peabody at 12 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to PAWS, 411 Lowell St., Wakefield, MA 01880.
