MELROSE—The Melrose High girls varsity soccer team picked up a key league win on Monday, Sept. 23 when they traveled to Stoneham for their first appearance on the new field turf surface at Stoneham High, and took a 1-0 victory from the Spartans on a cool, fall night.

With that victory, Melrose improved to 4-4 overall and 4-3 in the Middlesex League. They are 3-1 in the ML Freedom Division.

With a little more than two minutes left in the game against Stoneham, Melrose sophomore Lauren Healy scored her first-career goal off a corner kick by Cadence L’Heureux as the ball went off Healy’s body into the Spartans net.

“We played a controlled game and passed well,” said Melrose head coach Rob Mahoney. “We just were not able to finish beside the one goal.”

Melrose goalkeeper Lilah Croach made four saves to go to 2-1 in net on the season.

The win had followed Melrose’s effort on Sept. 19 when they lost, 1-0, at Wilmington.

“They have a very solid, organized team,” said Mahoney, about the Wildcats.

The lone tally came with 25 minutes remaining in the game.

L’Heureux came the closest to tying it as she had a shot that clanked off the crossbar with ten minutes to go.

Croach made seven stops in that game.

Melrose will next play on Sept. 27 when they visit Lexington at 4:45 pm. Melrose then host Arlington on Sept. 30 at 6:30 pm and that game will take place at Fred Green Field.
