LYNNFIELD — Results from the 2014 MCAS exams taken by students across the state last spring were released last week by the Mass. Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and Lynnfield students continue to score higher than the state average.

Superintendent of Schools Jane Tremblay was pleased Lynnfield students continued their long-standing tradition of performing well on the high stakes standardized test.

“The MCAS scores remain constant as we continue to work on teaching and learning in our classrooms,” said Tremblay. “Teachers and administrators continue to be reflective of the work, understanding that there is much to celebrate as we continue to find ways to improve the daily experiences for students in the classrooms.”

Grade 10

In grade 10, where passing the tests is a requirement for a student to receive a high school diploma, 73 percent of students scored at the advanced level in English while 24 percent were proficient, totaling 97 percent. Additionally, 3 percent were rated as needs improvement, which is still passing, and zero percent failed. In 2013, 73 percent of tenth graders were advanced in English, 24 percent were proficient, 1 percent needed improvement and 1 percent failed.

In grade 10 math, 89 percent of students scored advanced and proficient on the exam. According to the results, 66 percent were advanced, 23 percent were proficient, 11 percent needs improvement and 1 percent failed. In 2013, 71 percent of 10th graders were advanced, 19 percent were proficient, 8 percent needed improvement and 2 percent failed.

According to DESE, 90 percent of 10th graders were advanced and proficient on the science exam. The results revealed 42 percent of tenth graders were advanced, 48 percent were proficient, 10 percent needs improvement and 1 percent failed. In 2013, 49 percent were advanced, 42 percent were proficient, 7 percent needed improvement and 2 percent failed.

Grade 8

In grade 8 English, 93 percent of students were advanced and proficient on the high stakes test. According to the results, 26 percent of eighth graders were advanced, 67 percent were proficient, 7 percent needs improvement and 1 percent received a warning. In 2013, 43 percent were advanced, 49 percent were proficient, 5 percent needed improvement and 2 percent received a warning.

According to DESE, 67 percent of eighth graders received advanced and proficient scores on the math exam. The data revealed 26 percent of eighth graders were advanced, 41 percent were proficient, 23 percent needs improvement and 10 percent received a warning. In 2013, 27 percent were advanced, 39 percent were proficient, 25 percent needed improvement and 9 percent received a warning.

In grade 8 science, 55 percent of students received advanced and proficient scores on the exam. According to the results, 8 percent of eighth graders were advanced, 47 percent were proficient, 40 percent needs improvement and 6 percent received a warning. In 2013, 8 percent of eighth graders were advanced, 51 percent were proficient, 39 percent needed improvement and 3 percent received a warning.

Grade 7 

According to DESE, 90 percent of seventh graders received advanced and proficient scores on the English exam. The data revealed 23 percent of students were advanced, 67 percent were proficient, 8 percent needs improvement and 2 percent received a warning. In 2013, 34 percent of students were advanced, 60 percent were proficient, 5 percent needed improvement and 1 percent received a warning.

In grade 7 math, 61 percent of students were advanced and proficient on the exam. The data revealed 27 percent of students were advanced, 34 percent were proficient, 27 percent needs improvement and 12 percent received a warning. In 2013, 26 percent of seventh graders were advanced, 37 percent were proficient, 26 percent needed improvement and 11 percent received a warning.

Grade 6

According to DESE, 83 percent of sixth graders were advanced and proficient on the English exam. The data revealed 33 percent of sixth graders were advanced, 50 percent were proficient, 16 percent needs improvement and 1 percent received a warning. In 2013, 29 percent of sixth graders were advanced, 57 percent were proficient, 10 percent needed improvement and 3 percent received a warning.

In grade 6 math, 85 percent of sixth graders received advanced and proficient scores. According to the results, 47 percent of sixth graders were advanced, 38 percent were proficient, 11 percent needs improvement and 4 percent received a warning. In 2013, 29 percent were advanced, 41 percent were proficient, 23 percent needed improvement and 7 percent received a warning.

Grade 5

The results revealed 84 percent of fifth graders received advanced and proficient scores on the English exam. According to DESE, 38 percent of fifth graders were advanced, 46 percent were proficient, 13 percent needs improvement and 3 percent received a warning. In 2013, 42 percent were advanced, 48 percent were proficient, 7 percent needed improvement and 3 percent received a warning.

In grade 5 math, 83 percent of fifth graders were advanced and proficient on the exam. The data revealed 48 percent were advanced, 35 percent were proficient, 11 percent needs improvement and 6 percent received a warning. In 2013, 54 percent of sixth graders were advanced, 33 percent were proficient, 9 percent needed improvement and 5 percent received a warning.

According to DESE, 68 percent of fifth graders received advanced and proficient scores on the science exam. The results revealed 30 percent of fifth graders were advanced, 38 percent were proficient, 28 percent needs improvement and 4 percent received a warning. In 2013, 32 percent of fifth graders were advanced, 43 percent were proficient, 22 percent needed improvement and 3 percent received a warning.

Grade 4

In grade 4 English, 87 percent of fourth graders received advanced and proficient scores. The results indicated 50 percent of fourth graders were advanced, 37 percent were proficient, 11 percent needs improvement and 2 percent received a warning. In 2013, 39 percent of fourth graders were advanced, 46 percent were proficient, 10 percent needed improvement and 4 percent received a warning.

According to DESE, 87 percent of fourth graders were advanced and proficient on the math exam. The data revealed 48 percent of fourth graders were advanced, 39 percent were proficient, 11 percent needs improvement and 2 percent received a warning. In 2013, 48 percent of fourth graders were advanced, 41 percent were proficient, 9 percent needed improvement and 2 percent received a warning.

Grade 3

In grade 3 English, 86 percent of third graders were advanced and proficient on the high stakes test. The data revealed 31 percent of third graders were advanced, 55 percent were proficient, 13 percent needs improvement and 1 percent received a warning. In 2013, 34 percent of third graders were advanced, 49 percent were proficient, 14 percent needed improvement and 2 percent received a warning.

According to DESE, 94 percent of third graders were advanced and proficient on the math exam. The data revealed 62 percent of students were advanced, 32 percent were proficient, 4 percent needs improvement and 1 percent received a warning. In 2013, 62 percent were advanced, 32 percent were proficient, 5 percent needed improvement and 2 percent received a warning.
