LYNNFIELD — The School Committee honored fall student-athletes for their team and individual accomplishments on the court, field and golf course during a Jan. 10 meeting.
School Committee Chair Rich Sjoberg said it was an honor to recognize the 25 student-athletes for having a great fall sports season. He said the student-athletes’ accomplishments have made the community incredibly proud.
“The fall season was very successful for our athletic teams and individual athletes,” said Sjoberg. “We felt that it was important to recognize their achievements.”
Sjoberg noted that a number of student-athletes were unable to attend the meeting because they were playing winter sports or club sports, but four volleyball players were able to attend: Senior Celia Carbone, senior Giuliana Guarracino, junior Lilyana DeLeo and sophomore Chase Carangelo.
Superintendent Kristen Vogel recalled that the volleyball team advanced to the Division 4 Final Four last November. The second seeded Pioneers fell 3-1 to third seed Joseph Case in the state semifinals. Lynnfield punched its ticket to the Final Four after defeating Nantucket 3-0 in the Elite Eight. The Pioneers concluded the 2022 season with a 20-4 record.
Vogel noted that volleyball senior captain Ella Gizmunt was named as the Cape Ann League Baker Division co-MVP and was a CAL First-Team All-Star. She also said Gizmunt was named as a “Boston Globe” All-Scholastic and “Boston Herald” All-Scholastic player. She said Guarracino was selected as a Cape Ann League First-Team All-Star, and Celia Carbone was named as a CAL First-Team All-Star. Vogel said volleyball head coach Brent Ashley was selected as CAL coach of the year last fall.
Vogel and the School Committee presented certificates to Celia Carbone, Guarracino, DeLeo and Carangelo. Vogel noted that the entire volleyball team will be receiving certificates as well as three members of the football team who won CAL awards this fall.
There were eight members of the varsity football team who were recognized. Vogel recalled that senior captain Steven Dreher was named a CAL All-Star and was named as the CAL’s co-Defensive Player of the Year along with fellow senior captain James Sharkey. She said Sharkey was also selected as a CAL All-Star and was named as a “Boston Globe” All-Scholastic player.
Vogel said senior captain Chase Goldberg was named as the CAL’s Special Teams Player of the Year and a CAL All-Star. She said senior captain Robert Marley III was selected as a CAL All-Star. She said senior Sam Gazit, senior captain Charles Capachietti, senior Ethan Downey and junior Joseph Cucciniello were named CAL Honorable Mention All-Stars.
There were three field hockey players recognized by the CAL last fall. Vogel said senior captain Julia Carbone was selected as a CAL First-Team All-Star. She said senior captain Ava Marotta was named as a CAL First-Team All-Star. Vogel said senior Charlotte Radulski was selected as a CAL Second-Team All-Star.
Vogel said the CAL recognized four boys’ soccer team players this fall. She said senior captain Alex Gentile was named as a CAL First-Team All-Star, Eastern Massachusetts All-Star and an All-State All-Star. Vogel said sophomore Dillon Reilly was selected as a CAL First-Team All-Star and an Eastern Massachusetts All-Star. She said senior captain Henry Caulfield was named as a CAL Second-Team All-Star. Vogel said senior captain Drew Damiani was selected as a CAL Second-Team All-Star.
Three members of the girls’ soccer team were also recognized. Vogel recalled that captain Ally Sykes was named as a CAL First-Team All-Star and an Eastern Massachusetts All-Star. She said junior goalie Ava Gamache was selected as a CAL First-Team All-Star. Vogel noted that junior defender/midfielder Keely Briggs was named as a CAL Second-Team All-Star.
Vogel said two members of the golf team were named CAL all-stars. She said senior captain Gavin Leuci was named as a CAL First-Team All-Star. Vogel said senior captain Deven Henehan was selected as a CAL First-Team All-Star.
Cross-country senior captain Maddie Daigle was named as a CAL All-Star. Vogel said cheerleading captain Emily Palumbo was selected as a CAL All-Star.
Vogel congratulated all 25 student-athletes for being recognized by the CAL, “Boston Globe” and “Boston Herald.”
“We have so many athletes who have done so many wonderful things,” said Vogel.
Athletic Director Mia Muzio agreed.
“I want to congratulate all of our student-athletes,” said Muzio. “Their accomplishments this fall was pretty extensive.”
The meeting’s attendees gave the student-athletes a round of applause.
Sjoberg thanked the student-athletes’ parents for helping them succeed on the court, field and golf course this fall.
“There is no better feeling than pride in your children,” said Sjoberg. “We wanted to recognize their excellence, their hard work and their dedication as successful Lynnfield Pioneers.”
