WAKEFIELD — The North Reading 12-year old Williamsport All-Stars baseball team opened up District 13 play on June 29 against Wakefield at Fernald Field. Even though the game was in Wakefield, North Reading was the designated home team.
This game was a heartbreaking one for the locals as they fell, 4-2, in seven innings.
“It was a great game,” said North Reading manager Anthony DiBella “We fought hard and made a lot of good plays in the field.”
North Reading scored first as Tom Fagner delivered an RBI double in the bottom of the fourth inning. Fagner finished 2 for 3 at the dish as he was one of two multiple hitters for the team.
Wakefield tied the game up in the top of the fifth as they scored their lone run off staring pitcher Anthony DiBella Jr.
DiBella Jr. pitched six innings, giving up one run, two hits, two walks and striking out 11.
“He pitched well,” said DiBella.
However, Wakefield was able to plate three runs in the top of the seventh.
North Reading tried to crawl back scoring once on a fielder’s choice by David Machad but that was as close as they would come.
North Reading had six hits overall as Taggen Colarusso was the team’s other multiple hitter going 2 for 2.
Louis Brown had a double while Frank Pellegrino singled for the two other hits.
North Reading is in Pool A and will play three other games. The top two teams in both pools after the four-game pool play, will advance to decide the district champs.
North Reading played July 5 against Billerica at Benevento Park (results not available at press time). On July 6, North Reading plays host Andover at Degermond Field at 5:45 p.m.
Game four will be on July 9 at 5 p.m. at Benevento Park as they take on Wilmington.
