WEST NEWBURY — On Tuesday afternoon, the North Reading High girls’ soccer team shut out host Pentucket, 2-0, in West Newbury on their brand new turf field. The Hornets, who were playing their first road game of the year, improved to 3-0 overall and in the Cape Ann League with that victory.

North Reading scored once in each half. At the 39:02 mark, Marisa Montana, had the first one assisted by Kiersten Higgins.

Early in the second half, at the 47:54 point, Allie Lanciani had the other one assisted by Marisa Montana.

Goalie Maggie Schulz made three saves to post her third-consecutive shutout.

“The team looks good,” said Hornets head coach Sean Killeen. “We have so many players involved in the attack with different players scoring. The defense is getting more cohesive and will continue to get stronger each game in front of, I feel, the best keeper in the league. It should be a fun season.”

Last Friday evening, the Hornets steamrolled guest Triton by a final of 7-0. North Reading scored all four of its first-half goals in the game’s first 9:38 to turn the game into a rout early.

Julia Scammon scored the first two goals at the 1:25 and 3:47 marks. Maddie Vant had the first assist while Reilly Tassinari had the other assist.

Higgins also scored twice as Scammon assisted on the first one and Juliet Wasilewski had the other assist. Higgins scored the teams third and fifth goals as she had a goal in each half.

Lanciani had the final goal of the first half assisted by Tassinari.

Georgia Robarts and Maya Ortiz had the two final Hornets goals and they were both unassisted.

For Scammon, Robarts and Ortiz it was their first varsity goals.

“Julia had a highlight-reel shift during the first 10 minutes of the game,” added Killeen.

Schulz made three saves in goal against the Vikings.

“We came out to play and created many scoring chances,” said Killeen.

This game was supposed to have been played on Sept. 7 but was postponed a day due to the excessive heat.

The Hornets’ next game is Sept. 14 at 4:45 p.m. as they host Ipswich. On Sept. 19, the Hornets visit Manchester-Essex at 4:30 p.m.
