WATERTOWN — The Wakefield High girls’ soccer team traveled to Watertown on Tuesday for a game under the lights against the Raiders.

The Warriors have been working hard to get back in the win column after a handful of close games against other Freedom Division opponents including Wilmington (T, 1-1), Melrose (L, 2-0) and Stoneham (T, 1-1).

Wakefield broke through against the Raiders with a 5-1 victory, following the lead of senior captain Molly Forrest, who might need to change the spelling of her last name to “Fourest” after scoring 4 goals in the game and being named one of five Players of the Week in the state by the Boston Globe.

Senior captain Fiona Recene also scored and had an assist. Other assists went to senior captain Lucia Stevenson, junior Sam Goc and junior Kayla Hurley.

“We came out flying and scored in the first 5 minutes, something we have been trying to do all season,” said head coach Steph Martin.

The Warriors only improved after seizing the early momentum in this one as the defense locked in and the midfielders and strikers created more and more chances.

Junior goalkeeper Emma Waldeck had a strong game in net and the defense worked hard to continuously shut down any Raider chances, especially sophomore Rory McNeill who coach Martin said was a huge factor off the bench in frustrating the Watertown attack.

Wakefield improved their record to 2-4-2 with the victory.

It was no surprise to Martin that the senior leaders stepped up in this one as Wakefield made it a mission to secure a win.

“Despite not getting off to a great start this year this team has had tremendous leadership,” said Martin. “They have remained positive and helped create an environment where we still believe we are capable of a lot more success this season. It’s been such a pleasure coaching such an awesome group.”

The Warriors will try to keep it going tonight when they travel to Belmont (4-3-2) at 6:30 p.m.
