LYNNFIELD — The Lynnfield High boys’ lacrosse team beat guest Melrose, 13-9, last Friday afternoon in the final game of the regular season.

With that non-league win, the Pioneers ended the season at 15-3 overall.

The Pioneers led 4-3 at the half and outscored Melrose 9-6 in the second half.

“Our offense was able to convert its fast-break opportunities in the second half,” said Lynnfield head coach Pat Lamusta, whose team trailed 3-2 after the first quarter. “We got more settled in as the game went along.”

Will Norton, the team’s top scorer, had five goals and one assist. Owen Considine also finished with six points as he had three goals and three assists.

Evan Rocha and Owen Doherty both found the back of the Red Hawks’ net twice while Kelan Cardinal had one goal and two assists.

Mike Murphy and Niccolo Antidormi both chipped in one assist.

Pioneer goalie, Ben Pimentel, made nine saves to go to 15-3.

“This is a game against a Middlesex League opponent that allows us to get dialed in for the tournament,” explained Lamusta.

In their last Cape Ann League game of the year, the Pioneers edged league newcomer, Essex Tech, 15-14, in overtime on May 22 to capture the CAL Baker Division crown.

Considine was the hero scoring the game-winning goal late in the first overtime session.

“He made a nice move against two defenders to get that goal,” pointed out Lamusta, as Considine was surrounded by his team in celebration after the game-winner.

Lynnfield led 10-7 at the half and 13-11 after the third quarter but were outscored by the Hawks, 3-1, in the fourth.

“They have a good program,” said Lamusta. “They beat us in the tournament back in 2011 and they are a good addition to our league.”

Cardinal had a career-high five goals to go with four assists for a career-high nine points.

“He is a dynamic player who does a great job assisting,” said Lamusta, about the Pioneers’ assist leader. “This game also shows that he can score as well.”

Norton also scored five times while Considine also had one assist to go with his game-winner.

Murphy had the team’s other four goals.

That was Lynnfield’s Senior Night as the eight 12th-graders were honored before the game.

“It was a memorable night for the seniors, winning this way,” said Lamusta.

Pimentel turned back six Hawks shots on net.

Lynnfield finished at 11-2 in the CAL with the victory.

The Pioneers ended up as the 4th seed in the final MIAA Division 4 power rankings as they will get to open up the postseason at home.

The seedings come out on May 29.
