WAKEFIELD — Wakefield was well-represented on the Middlesex League All-Star list for the 2024 girls’ outdoor track and field season as nine Warriors were selected: seniors Lauren Mangarelli, Charlotte O’Neil and Cheyenne Toppi; juniors Sophia Anderson, Grace Brackett and Lily Sallee; sophomores Liza Bangston and Abby Hartigan and freshman Quin Wilcox.
The Warriors went undefeated in the regular season this year to earn the title of Middlesex League Freedom Division champions.
Mangarelli was an All-Star in the shot put and Wakefield’s top point scorer this year. “She excelled all season in the shot put and discus,” said head coach Karen Barrett.
O’Neil made the list in the 2 mile.
“She ran really well this season,” said Barrett.
Toppi was an All-Star in the triple jump. She also competed in the pentathlon at the State Meet.
“She improved so much and scored some clutch points in the long and triple jump,” said Barrett.
Anderson made it in the long jump, an event in which she set a new school record this season with a 16’9.75”.
“That was an amazing accomplishment since we didn’t have any home base for her to practice everyday,” said Barrett referring to Wakefield’s home track and field, which was torn up before the season to kick off construction on Wakefield’s new school.
Brackett was an All-Star in the 2 mile.
“She made a big jump with a huge PR for the season,” said Barrett.
Sallee officially made the list in the 800 meters, though she qualified as an All-Star in multiple events.
“She could have made it in the 400, mile or 2 mile which is amazing,” said Barrett. “We only allow an athlete to get All Star in one event so others get an opportunity. She was our top point-scorer in the running events. She works so hard and I could not be more proud of the season she had.”
Bangston was also an All-Star in the 800.
“She had a fabulous season,” said the coach.
Hartigan made the list in the 100 meters.
“She had a fabulous season in both the 100 and 200,” said Barrett.
Wilcox was Wakefield’s lone freshman All-Star representative. She made it in the 400 meters.
“It is extremely impressive for a freshman to be voted All Star in such a talented league,” said Barrett.
At their annual end of the season banquet, the Warriors celebrated their seniors one final time, congratulated their All-Stars, handed out team awards and announced the captains for next year.
Mangarelli was named MVP of the field events while Sallee earned MVP in the track events.
The new captains for the 2025 season will be Sallee, Brackett, Megan Clark and Rachel Caplin.
