GLOUCESTER — It came down to the wire for the Lynnfield High boys’ cross country team on Sept. 18 but they held on for an exciting, 28-29 win at Ravenswood Park in Gloucester against Manchester-Essex. The Pioneers moved to 2-0 with the victory.
“There are not many times you win a cross country meet when you score 28 points,” said head coach Bill Wallace.
Lynnfield was led, once again, by senior captain Shea McCarthy who took 1st overall in 17:05, just 1 second off of the course record.
He was followed by junior captain Dylan Nguyen (17:59, 3rd overall), junior Nick DeGennaro (18:58, 7th), junior Mike Marenghi (19:38, 8th) and senior captain Ashkrit Mahajan (19:43, 9th).
On Saturday, the Pioneers traveled to Wrentham to compete in the annual Frank Kelley Invitational.
“The conditions were tough but the boys still ran very well,” said Wallace.
Lynnfield had two runners earn medals in Wrentham.
McCarthy took 12th overall in the Grade 12 3K with a time of 10:27.40.
Nguyen took 13th overall in the Grade 11 3K in 11:06.70.
DeGennaro was 34th in the Junior race in 11:33.80.
Mahajan was 50th in the Senior race in 11:47.40.
Lynnfield will host Ipswich in their next meet on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
