NORTH READING — The Wakefield High golf team will officially return to the Div. 2 North Sectional tournament this year.

The Warriors, who will make an appearance in the tournament for the first time since 2019, punched their ticket with a victory over Northeast Metro Tech on Sept. 18 while also pushing their winning streak to five.

The Warriors moved to 7-4-1 with a tie against Middlesex League best Winchester, 36-36 on Monday at Thomson Country Club in North Reading.

Perhaps even more than their five-match winning streak, it was Wakefield’s tie against the Red and Black that proved they can compete with anyone, not just in the league, but at the sectional tournament.

Wakefield won four individual matches while Winchester won three. They tied at No. 6.

The Warriors got victories from Daegan Pothier (5-4, 39), Ryan Dodge (6.5-2.5, 40), Jake Morris (5-4, 40) and Ryan McCarthy (7.5-1.5, 41).

Brayden Myette earned a tie, 4.5-4.5 with a 41.

Each Wakefield player shot consistently, even in matchup losses against tough competition. At No. 1, Patrick Maloney fell 5.5-.3.5 but he tied Pothier with a team-best 39 at Thomson’s Par 36.

Captain Luke Greif shot a 41 at No. 2.

In the end, the Warriors kept their undefeated streak alive. They haven’t lost since Sept. 5, which was six matches ago.

Wakefield will look to keep playing well at the Middlesex League Shootout, which started this morning at Bear Hill Golf Club.

After that, they have two more regular season matches on the schedule, first on Monday, 3:30 p.m. against Watertown at Thomson and then on Oct. 8, 2:45 p.m. against Saugus at King Rail Reserve in Lynnfield.
