WAKEFIELD — The Wakefield Memorial High School volleyball team faced Reading in a thrilling match on Monday night at the Charbonneau Field House. After coming up short in a match against Woburn last Saturday, the Warriors were looking to bounce back and keep their momentum going.
In the first set, Wakefield came out strong and won 25-9. However, Reading came up on their tails in the latter half of the game, scoring 16 points in the second set and 18 points in the third set. Yet, the Warriors’ perseverance and focus caused them to prevail and win those sets 25-16 and 25-18, slaughtering the Rockets and winning the game.
The upperclassmen on the team continue to be a driving force and a large contributor to their impressive 8-3 record. The Warriors had 27 kills on Monday night and the juniors allocated for 89 percent of them. Lila Arkinstall and captain Mia Kenny led the movement and contributed to about half of the team’s kills. Arkinstall also made 3 total blocks during the game.
Additionally, Wakefield had 54 total digs in which the seniors dominated a large percentage of them. Captain Sophia Anderson, who is committed to Regis College for volleyball, had a total of 16 digs. Captain Brooklyn Calder continues to fulfill her job as a defensive specialist, in which she had a total of 15 digs and received 17 serves.
The team’s motto, “All out. All game. All season,” has seemed to help them in continuing their impressive run. When they have a tough loss, they always rebound by holding on to every play and following through.
The Warriors (8-3) will face Arlington Catholic at home on Sunday, October 6.
