NORTH READING — The North Reading girls’ cross country team scored their first team victory of the season as they defeated the Pentucket Panthers 25-31 on Senior Day at NRHS. Junior Quin Kelly broke her own course record as she cruised to the victory in the race with a time of 21:28 over the 5k course. Sophomores Adelyn Kelly and Riley MacDonald took 2nd and 3rd overall respectively with times of 22:33 and 22:35.
“This was a total team effort today. Every athlete stepped up and ran their best race of the season. So many personal bests and lots of proud athletes at the finish line. This was a tremendous day for the program and it is very fitting that it was on Senior Day,” said Hornets head coach Ryan Spinney.
Freshman Chloe DeAngelis (8th, 24:55), senior co-captain Vanessa Steinmeyer (11th, 25:58), 8th grader Ruby Davidson (12th, 26:07), 8th grader Verity Modeen (13th, 26:10) and senior Cybele Miller (18th, 28:18) rounded out the Hornet competitors in the race. The victory improved the Hornets’ record to 1-2 on the CAL season.
Boys fall to talented Pentucket squad, 17-45
Sophomore Nalo Benedict improved his school record course time by 20 seconds as he took 4th overall against Pentucket in a time of 19:06. Senior co-captain Alex Mitasev (8th, 19:45), sophomore Connor Abruzzese (10th, 20:57), senior Dawson Duffley (12th, 21:18), senior co-captain Raffi Toby (13th, 21:31), junior Jacob Ye (14th, 22:05), freshman Charlie Sarno (15th, 22:09), 8th grader Dominic Spada (16th, 22:16), senior Aidan Kennedy (20th, 22:32), freshman Cole Donohue (26th, 23:20), senior Michael Mahoney (29th, 24:48) and senior Aidan Seaman (30th, 24:50) rounded out the Hornet competitors in the race.
“Every single one of our athletes had excellent performances today,” said Spinney. “They all stepped up and ran their best efforts of the season. The result may look like a lopsided race but it was not like that at all. We did a tremendous job today and are very proud of each of our athletes.” The loss dropped to the Hornets to 0-3 on the CAL season.
The Hornets finished up their CAL regular season schedule on Wednesday after press time against Triton at Old Town Hill in Newbury.
