Enjoyed bowling and vacations to Florida and Cape Cod
MELROSE — Mildred L. (Hutchins) “Millie” Hughes longtime resident of Melrose and Westport passed away peacefully at Sunrise of Lynnfield on Saturday, November 9 at the age of 88.
Mildred was born in Stoneham on April 6, 1936 to the late Herbert C. and Katherine M. (Simmons) Hutchins. She was raised and educated in Malden. She married Angelo DiRienzo and they settled in Melrose to raise their five children. She ran an at home daycare for many years and then worked for Johnnie’s Foodmaster for the rest of her career.
In her free time, Millie enjoyed bowling, playing Pokeno on Friday night with “the girls” and also loved Bingo! Later in life, Millie met Jack and moved to Westport to begin her retirement. She and Jack enjoyed bus trips to Atlantic City and vacations to Florida and Cape Cod.
Spirited and quick witted, Millie was always up for a game of cards with the family. She never hesitated to enjoy a laugh with a quick one-liner or sarcastic joke with the family. She was the proud grandmother of eleven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She will be deeply missed, but always lovingly remembered for her sense of humor and her strong dedication to family. May she rest in peace.
Millie was the beloved wife of the late John M. “Jack” Hughes III and the late Angelo DiRienzo. Loving mother of Lisa DiRienzo-Boyer of Washingtonville, NY; Michael DiRienzo and his wife Catherine of Ware; Stephen DiRienzo and his wife Cara of W. Springfield; Tina Scalisi and her husband Brian of Saugus; and the late Nancy J. DiRienzo. Cherished grandmother of Joseph Boyer and his wife Megan; Angela Boyer; Jennifer Boyer; Krystle DiRienzo; Michael DiRienzo; Mia DiRienzo; Olivia DiRienzo; Luciana Pedro and her husband Alex; Francesca DiRienzo; Sophia Scalisi; and Juliana Scalisi. Great grandmother of Devin, Gracie, William, Autumn, Trent, Liam and Raiden.
Relatives and friends were invited to gather during visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Thursday, November 14 from 4 to 7 p.m. and again for her funeral service celebrated on Friday, November 15 at 11:30 a.m. Interment at Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.
