Talented gardener and blackjack player
MELROSE — May Comeau of Melrose passed away Friday, November 8 at the age of 90. She was born May 5, 1934 in Comeauville, Nova Scotia. She was the daughter of the late Gustave and Emilda (Doucet) Comeau. She was predeceased by her brothers Louis, Hector and Normand; and sisters Claudette, Claire and Corinne.
During her childhood in Canada, she overcame a significant illness with a combination of medicine and faith. This began a lifelong relationship with St. Joseph which she relied on to get her through the more difficult times in her life. She continued living in Canada until a handsome man in a Navy uniform swept her off of her feet. She then embraced the role of housewife and mother. Her home, with the corner lot and white picket fence, was not just her haven but became the gathering spot for the neighborhood children to play sports or wait for the ice cream truck. She loved being able to look outside and see all of the activity.
She was an avid and talented gardener who always kept the yard neat and colorful. She was also a skilled blackjack player who enjoyed relieving local casinos of their money during her frequent visits over the years. She was proud of her Canadian heritage and returned there regularly to reunite with her family. She also enjoyed her trips to St Kitts with her husband Paul and the crew from Bellevue.
She leaves behind her son David; daughter-in-law Anne; and her grandson Daniel of Peabody. She is predeceased by her husband Paul and daughter Karen.
Visiting hours will be held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Saturday, November 16 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. followed by a funeral service at 1 p.m. Relatives and friends respectfully invited to attend. Interment will be private. To sign online condolence, visit gatelyfh.com.
