NORTH READING – The weather has been mild so far this season but as we all recall from last year, there’s still a long 10 weeks of winter ahead of us. Still, it’s not too early to start thinking about spring and specifically, the May annual election.
Because, to coin a phrase, it’s later than you think.
Nomination papers for the May 3 annual town election will be available in the town clerk’s office in town hall beginning Tuesday, Jan. 19.
There are seven local elected offices up for renewal in 2016, most of them for three years.
Those who will face the voters include incumbent Board of Selectmen Chairman Robert Mauceri and fellow incumbent Michael Prisco; incumbent School Committee Chairman Janene Imbriano and veteran school board member Mel Webster; two–long serving members of the Community Planning Commission, Patricia Romeo and Warren Pearce, and incumbent town moderator John Murphy, (a one year term).
To qualify for the ballot, the candidates must return nomination papers to the town clerk’s office with the certified signatures of at least 50 registered voters by Tuesday, March 15 at 5 p.m.. To avoid disappointment, it’s always advisable to obtain more than the minimum number of signatures since some may be illegible, ineligible or duplicates.
The last day to register to vote for the annual town election is Wednesday, April 13 at 8 p.m. For assistance, call the Town Clerk’s office at 978–357–5218.
