WAKEFIELD — An 18-year-old bicyclist from Wakefield was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston after suffering head injuries in an accident with a car yesterday afternoon on New Salem Street.
Police, Fire and Action Ambulance went to to the area of 66 New Salem St. after a caller reported the accident at about 5:15 p.m. Police said that a 2015 Volkswagen Tiguan driven by a 25-year-old Somerville woman and the cyclist were traveling in the same direction on New Salem Street with the cyclist on the right side of the roadway. Police said that it appears that the cyclist was struck by the VW when he swerved his bike out into the roadway to avoid some puddles.
A police spokesman said it did not appear the victim was wearing a helmet.
The Fire Department reported that the cyclist also suffered significant cuts and scrapes but was conscious and alert when EMTs arrived.
The State Police Accident Reconstruction Team was called to the scene, but Wakefield Police said that there are currently no charges pending against the driver, although they will wait for the full report from the State Police before making a final determination on any charges.
