North Reading High School has named Andrea Slaven as the new varsity field hockey coach. Slaven has coached at multiple levels and brings a unique blend of youth and experience to the Hornets.
“She’s a great fit because she has coached at the club level and brings her youthful exuberance to the sport,” said athletic director Dave Johnson.
Slaven played field hockey at Saint Michael’s where she set the all-time record for career points (117), goals in a season (21), career goals (51), and games played (75).
In addition to her playing experience, Slaven has had success as a coach at both the high school and college level.
She has served as an assistant coach at Merrimack College since 2013. She helped the Warriors reach two final fours, and the championship game in 2015.
Slaven is also a three-time Cape Ann League Coach of the Year (2010-12) from her time as a coach at Manchester-Essex. The Hornets won three straight CAL small titles during her tenure.
Slaven currently teaches first grade at the Hood School and is looking forward to the opportunity to lead a North Reading team that is looking for a positive influence.
“North Reading has been a very welcoming community in and out of the classroom,” said Slaven. “I am looking forward to building the program and getting the field hockey players involved in the community.”
