BOSTON — The Wakefield High School Dance Team Program recently attended the Universal Dance Association overnight camp at Emmanuel College.

At camp, each dancer learned three routines over the course of three days, and attended team and individual technique classes.

During the last day of camp, they performed in an evaluation. Their hard work and dedication paid off, and it showed at evaluation time.

The team was awarded The Leadership Award. This award, voted on by their peers, is presented to the team that has truly demonstrated leadership and good sportsmanship throughout the week.

The WMHS dance team also received the UDA Full-Out Award. This award is given to the team with the best overall creative choreography changes and formation choices in their team routine.

The team also earned the Superior Dance Award, which is based on the individual evaluation of each dancer on all three of their routines. This award is the direct result of each dancer on the team earning the highest level of recognition in all of their routines.

These accomplishments have earned them a bid to compete in UDA’s National High School Dance Competition.

Each year at UDA camps around the country, dancers have an opportunity to learn additional choreography to be evaluated on, and then possibly be awarded the All-American Award. This award earns them not only the special recognition but also the opportunity to perform in the New Year’s Eve Parade in London.

“I am proud to announce that this year we have six All American’s on our team,” said coach Candice Spencer. “Seniors, Julia Cheffro, Sydney Flannigan, Talia Gebhard, Emily Roberts; and juniors, Tara Kelley and Katherine Sullivan. I am very proud of the team, and it is an honor to coach such a remarkable group of talented young women.”

Fans can see the WMHS dance team perform at upcoming football games and other competitions.
