MELROSE — Mrs. Nina J. (Kulpa) DiOrio, 82, a longtime resident of Melrose, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 24, 2018.

Nina was born in Everett on April 1, 1935, the eldest of six children of the late Peter and Olga (Nikouchuk) Kulpa. Raised in Chelsea, Nina graduated from Chelsea High School. As the oldest of six children, she assumed a maternal position at an early age and carried this with her as a young mother of four children. Nina was a loving, and disciplined homemaker who dedicated her life to raising and caring for her children, and later her grandchildren.

In her younger years, she enjoyed days spent at East Boston beach. She loved to dance and cook throughout her life. She also loved to clean, and was a knowledgeable and passionate fan of classic films. In particular, her all time favorite actor was the one and only John Wayne. She loved all movies, frequented the theater in Revere with her family, and had a special love for the classic old westerns.

A true matriarch, Nina was a woman of great strength, conviction, and authority. However, during life’s most difficult time, Nina acted with grace under pressure. She faced her health challenges by displaying kindness, humility, and love for those around her. Nina’s family will forever treasure those moments and remember her with love forever.

Nina was the beloved wife of the late Frank C. “Muzzy” DiOrio. Devoted mother of Esther Hughes and her husband Michael, Nina M. DiOrio, Frank G. DiOrio, and Peter J. DiOrio. Dear sister of Diane Boyle, Tony Kulpa and his wife Barbara, and the late Peter, Joseph, and Alex Kulpa. Former sister-in-law of the late Robert Boyle. Loving grandmother of seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends gathered in honor of Nina’s life at St. Mary’s Church, Herbert St., Melrose for her funeral Mass celebrated on Saturday, Jan. 27. Interment to follow at Glenwood Cemetery, Everett. For online tribute or directions: RobinsonFuneralHome.com.
