WAKEFIELD — The Middlesex League gymnastics coaches met recently to make this year’s All-Star selections in both the Freedom and Liberty
divisions.
The Wakefield Memorial High School gymnastics team, coming off a fantastic season in which they won four meets in the regular season and finished eighth in the North Sectionals, had two gymnasts named as Middlesex League All-Stars, as Wakefield freshman classmates Giana Liotine and Lola Barrett are 2018 M.L. Freedom division All-Stars.
Barrett and Liotine were excellent for the Warriors all season in multiple events. The two competed in the Massachusetts State Individuals at Tewksbury High School on Feb. 19, where Liotine competed on vault, bars and beam and Barrett competed in bars, beam and floor.
Barrett made the All-Star team on the floor exercise while Liotine was selected for the vault.
The Warriors were two of just four freshman selected as All-Stars. Barrett and Reading freshman Rachel Spezzaferro were the only two All-Stars selected on the floor. Liotine was the only freshman selected for the vault.
League champion Reading led the way with five All-Stars. Wakefield, Melrose and Stoneham all had two selections while Winchester had one representative.
