Go 1-2 in quad meet, Wensley takes fourth in Lowell Holiday Tournament

WOBURN — The Wakefield Memorial High wrestling team stayed busy over the holiday break with a quad-meet on Wednesday morning at Woburn High School and with the Lowell Holiday Tournament last weekend at Lowell High School.

The results of the quad-meet weren’t to Wakefield’s liking as it posted a 1-2 record in the meet. The Warriors defeated host Woburn, 46-30, but dropped dual meets against Lawrence, 54-18, and North Andover, 55-21.

In the Lowell Holiday Tournament, Wakefield finished 38th overall out of 72 teams.

Wakefield currently is 5-3 on the season in dual meet competition.

Woburn Meet

The Warriors won nine of the 14 weight classes to prevail.

Evan McGuire, a junior, scored a victory by major decision (9-0) over Jack Hayes at the 126 weight class.

At 132, senior Connor Shine pulled out an 11-7 decision over Anthony Newman.

Ryan Smith, a freshman, accepted a forfeit at 138.

Wakefield lost the 145 and 152 matches by pin. Ben Piercy, a sophomore, lost to Dan Haverty at 1:06 of the 145 bout. Joe Marinaccio, a sophomore, was defeated by Anthony Carter at 57 seconds.

At 160, junior Evan Gourville pinned Mike Herbert at 1:13.

Dan Bertini, a senior, was pinned by Woburn’s Julian Jolicouer at 2:15 of the 170 match.

The Warriors then took five matches in a row which allowed them to win the meet.

Senior tri-captain Ryan Cunningham accepted a forfeit at 182 before senior tri-captain Dan Wensley pinned Marty Joyce at 1:33 of the 195 weight class.

Senior tri-captain Alex Kane was involved in quite a tussle with Dan Meaney at the 220 match. Kane pulled out a 6-5 decision in four overtimes.

The Warriors won the 285 and 106 contests by pin. At 285, senior Eric Schilling took down Dan MacNeil at 2:31. At 106, sophomore Jack Spicer defeated Ryan Moran at 1:50.

Woburn’s Charles O’Connor accepted a forfeit at 113 and junior Shannon Drager was pinned by Nick Camacho at 49 seconds of the 120 contest to end the meet.

Lawrence Meet

The Warriors won just four weight classes as they dropped a non-league meet against Lawrence.

Wakefield lost the 132, 138, 145, 152 and 160 matches all by pin. At 132, freshman Jake Goodchild was beaten by Charlie Santana at 47 seconds. At 138, Smith was taken down by Dom Abreu at 1:15. At 145, Piercy lost by fall to Jose Espinal at 2:57. At 152, Marinaccio lost to Jesus Germano at 4:57. At 160, Bertini was defeated by Raphael Medina at 3:15.

Gourville earned Wakefield’s first points of the meet as he squeaked out a 2-0 decision over Jason Senicion at the 170 weight class.

Cunnigham was pinned by Edgardo Cartegtena at 3:47 of the 182 contest.

Wensley and Kane both earned victories at 195 and 220. Wensley pinned Kenny Richards at 3:31 of the 195 match. At 220, Kane prevailed by an 11-5 decision over Shawn Santos.

At 285, Nick Murphy, a senior, lost by pin at 2:31.

Spicer earned Wakefield’s final points of the meet as he pinned Luis Santiago at 1:47 of the 106 bout.

There was no contest at 113 and Lawrence won the 120 and 126 weight classes by pin. At 120, McGuire lost to Enrique Fermin at 1:03. At 126, Shine was defeated at 31 seconds.

North Andover Meet

The Warriors took on the North Andover wrestling juggernaut and dropped a 55-21 match against the Scarlet Knights. Wakefield won four of the 14 weight classes.

At 138, Goodchild lost by major decision to Costas Vergados.

At 145 and 152, Piercy and Marinaccio both lost by pin. Piercy lost to Matt Alexander at 39 seconds at 145. At 152, Marinaccio was defeated by Kyle Milanovic at 1:05.

Bertini accepted a forfeit at 160 before Gourville and senior Vinny Murdocca both lost by pin at 170 and 182, respectively. Gourville was defeated by Fritz Hoehn at 1:33. Murdocca lost by fall to Stephen Cincotta at 47 seconds.

Wensley pinned Matt Messina at 1:53 of the 195 contest and Kane scored a victory by a 7-3 decision against Kyros Vergados at 220.

At 285, Murphy dropped a 4-3 decision against Dauma Fernandez.

Spicer accepted a forfeit at 106 and North Andover’s Connor Ford accepted a forfeit at 113.

The Warriors lost the final three weight classes by pin. At 120, Drager was defeated by Steve Manning at 1:10. At 126, McGuire was taken down by Jack Perry at 1:05. At 132, Smith lost by fall to Adrigan Polanco at 2:37.

Lowell Holiday Tournament

The Warriors had one place winner in the Lowell Holiday Tournament as Wensley finished in fourth place at the 195 weight class.

Wensley posted a 6-2 record to secure fourth in his weight class.

The senior tri-captain won by technical fall (15-0) over BC High’s Mitch Comeau. Wensley then pinned Malden’s Jon Omre and Stoughton’s Joe Girolamo at 41 seconds and 3:52.

Wensley then lost a 2-1 decision to Springfield Cathedral’s Jered Escribano.

The senior rebounded with three more victories. Wensley pinned St. Johnsbury, Vt.’s Hunter Ladd at 2:07 and then he won by fall over Tewksbury’s Broc Dokos at 2:12. Wensley’s final win was by decision as he defeated Londonderry, N.H.’s Rich Bilodeau by a 5-0 tally.

Wensley then faced Escribano again and lost a 3-1 decision for the fourth place finish.

McGuire posted a 3-2 record at 120, while Murphy and Kane had 2-2 records at 220 and 285.

Smith, Gourville and freshman Steve Mercurio had a 1-2 records at 132, 160 and 170.

Spicer, Goodchild and Murdocca each went 0-2 at the 106, 126 and 182 weight classes.

Wakefield will compete in the South Hadley duals tomorrow at 10 a.m. at South Hadley High School.
