WAKEFIELD — The Middlesex League’s football coaches met recently to make this year’s All-Star selections in both the Liberty and Freedom Divisions.
The WMHS football team, who finished fourth in the Freedom Division had one All-Star named, as senior captain and quarterback Mike Lucey got the call. Lucey had six touchdown passes and two rushing touchdowns this season.
Freedom Champion Stoneham, went 5-0 in league play and recently won the Div. 6 Super Bowl, led the league with eight All-Stars. Third-place Burlington (3-2) had six selections while Melrose (4-1) and Wilmington (1-4) both tied with four.
In the Liberty Division, first-place Reading (5-0), who handed Stoneham their only loss on Thanksgiving, had eight All-Stars. Second-place Lexington (4-1) had seven selections followed by six from Woburn (2-3), five from Winchester (2-3), four from Belmont (1-4) and three from Arlington (1-4).
In a new All-Star format this year, All-Conference teams were selected for both offense and defense.
The Freedom Division’s Burlington led the charge for the All-Conference Offensive Team with three out of the 11 selections.
Reading and Stoneham both headed the Defensive Team with each team having three of the 11 selections.
