READING — William L. “Bill” Giglio, 82, of Reading, formerly of Wakefield, died Friday, March 1, 2019.
Born in Everett on April 25, 1936 he was the son of the late Joseph P. and Josephine Giglio.
Bill was raised in Malden and was a graduate of Malden Vocational High School class of 1954 and served in the United States Navy from 1956 to 1959. His professional career began in 1961, working as an aircraft mechanic, flight instructor, and technical writer for Northeast Airlines, also authoring pilot, mechanic, and flight crew avionic training manuals for commercial aircraft.
In 1974, he started his career in education as an Electronics teacher at Northeast Metropolitan Regional Vocational Technical High School, Wakefield. He graduated from Fitchburg State College, with a B.S. In Education, Class of 1977 and an M.S. in Education, Class of 1979. Bill later spent several years in the private sector as Manager of Training for Wang Labs and also as Training Manager and Flight Instructor for Air New England.
Returning to teaching, he worked at North Shore Vocational Technical High School, as Lead Teacher for Electronics and HVAC/Electrical Programs. He also taught electronics at Plymouth South High School. An Adjunct Professor at University of Massachusetts, Boston for many years, he designed and taught their very popular vocational educators certification program. He was also Telecommunications instructor for JATC Training Center for Local IBEW 103, designing the curriculum, instructor guides, and manuals, as well as personally designing a computer learning laboratory/literacy program for union members throughout the Boston area.
Returning to and retiring from Northeast Metropolitan Regional Vocational Technical High School, he proudly finished a successful career as a highly respected vocational educator and administrator in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. He authored many articles, manuals, texts and grants throughout his career in the airline, vocational education, and private technology sectors.
Bill was also a longtime member of the advisory committees of Franklin Technical Institute and Northeast Regional Vocational Technical High School. He was a mentor to many teachers and students alike throughout his career and was a proud advocate for vocational education. He held many teaching certifications, FCC and FAA licensures, and was an amateur ham radio operator. His hobbies included building radios, televisions, computers and travelling with his family. Despite all of his achievements, he was most proud of being a loving husband and father and spending time with his family.
He was the beloved husband of Palma M. “Pam” (DiNuccio). He was the loving father of Valerie L. Giglio-Samson and husband Mark of Stoneham. He was the brother of John and James Giglio and the late Rosario “Bob” Giglio. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
His funeral will be held from the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Friday at 9:30 a.m., followed by a funeral Mass in St. Florence Church, 47 Butler Ave., Wakefield at 10:30 a.m. Visitation for relatives and friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 4-8 p.m. Interment, Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.
