NORTH ANDOVER — Sometimes, everlasting school records are broken on the biggest of stages.
For four years, 2019 Wakefield senior captain Eadeen Beck has been improving in the throwing events; so much so that a nearly 40-year discus school record was finally looking mortal once again.
But as the competitions went on this season, it looked like Beck would have to settle as simply one of the best throwers in school history.
On Sunday at the Div. 3 State Meet at Merrimack College, Beck made it official: She was the best.
Her throw of 109’7” beat Diana Kilroe’s 1980 throw of 109’6.5” and gave Wakefield four points as Beck finished 5th overall.
“She really earned that record,” said head coach Karen Barrett. “She had such a tremendous track and field career. Her effort, attitude and work ethic were tremendous. She was a phenomenal leader and she will be missed a lot next year. I am so proud of her.”
The Warriors had plenty more individual achievements that resulted in a fantastic team showing.
Olivia Fetherston got second in the high jump with a leap of 5’4”. She also had a 15’11 in the long jump. The junior will be moving on to All States next weekend.
Adriana Minasian was in rhythm on Sunday after finishing 3rd overall in the pentathlon with 2,364 points including a first in the high jump, and 3rd place finishes in the long jump and shot put.
At the state meet, Minasian placed 8th in the high jump with a PR of 5’0” and jumped a 34’5” in the triple jump to take 9th.
“She works very hard and it paid off at States,” said Barrett.
Elina Olmedo had a PR in the 800, running 2:28.09 to get 16th.
Two Warriors had PR’s in the 100 meters as Ava Vaughan ran a 13.15 and Jade Roycroft ran 13.38.
Freshman Maeve Recene took 8th in the 400 with a time of 61.75. Her time was the second fastest amongst freshmen in the event.
Freshman Sammy Seabury finished 9th in the two mile with a 12:15.22. Olivia Lucey was 14th with a 12:31.82.
Wakefield finished 13th in the 4×100 and 14th in the 4×400. The 4×100 team (Roycroft, Vaughan, Reignyah Grant and Bridget Noell) ran a 52.43. The all-freshman 4×400 team (Sophie Brown, Kayli Porter, Ashlee Purcell and Recene) ran a 4:26.56.
Brown took 9th in the pole vault with a 7’06.
Lillian Jones jumped 32’05 in the triple jump.
Lily Camille-Cullan was 15th in the discus with a throw of 85’09.
Julia Castellano was 13th in the javelin with a 95’06.
