LYNNFIELD — On Monday afternoon, the Lynnfield High field hockey team edged visiting Pentucket 2-1 on a hot, humid day. With that win, the Pioneers improved to 5-2 overall and in the Cape Ann League.

“I was very happy,” said Pioneers head coach Mamie Reardon. “Pentucket has a very good team and it was a nice bounce back from our loss the game before.”

Due to the heat, the teams were given two minute breaks every 15 minutes of play.

“The heat was a factor for both teams,” admitted Reardon.

Lily Rothwell scored the lone goal of the opening half with 12:31 left assisted by Olivia Ventre.

Just 1:06 into the second half, the Sachems tied it.

However, Anna Kaminski scored the game-winning goal with 11:20 remaining. Bella Scala had the assist.

Ava O’Brien made three saves as she improved to 5-2 in goal.

“She played very well,” said Reardon.

Fall to Newburyport

On Sept. 19, the Pioneers lost a shootout, 6-4, to Newburyport as it was the second game of the season for the team that ended up with 10 total goals.

“We had a lot of defensive breakdowns,” said Reardon.

Maddie Murphy got the locals on the scoreboard with 26:25 left in the first half off a corner. Ventre assisted.

From there the Clippers erupted for five-straight goals. They scored three of them in a span of 6:52 to go to the break up, 3-1.

They then scored at the 28:48 and 16:19 marks to make it a four-goal advantage.

Lynnfield did not roll over as Kaminski scored with 13:44 left. Just 30 seconds later, Rothwell cut the lead to two assisted by Carolyn Garofoli to make things interesting.

Newburyport then extended the lead to three again with 10:16 scoring on a breakaway to get the momentum back.

Murphy had the game’s final goal, unassisted, with 2:55 left.

“We get caught up high on defense several times,” said Reardon.

O’Brien made 10 stops in that game as she saw a lot of action.

The next two games for the Pioneers will be at home. On Wednesday (Sept. 25), they welcome Georgetown. Two days later, they host Newburyport trying to get a split of the season series.

Both games will start at 3:45 p.m.
