LYNNFIELD — In a thrilling game on Sept. 26th, the Lynnfield High boys soccer team edged visiting Newburyport by a final of 3-2.
“It was definitely our biggest win of the season so far,” stated Lynnfield head coach Brett Munroe. “They entered the game undefeated.”
The Pioneers were also able to get a season split against the Clippers as Newburyport won 2-0 in the first meeting on Sept. 18.
With that victory, Lynnfield improved to 5-5 overall and 4-5 in the Cape Ann League.
Tom Hauser scored the game’s first goal 15 minutes in. The Clippers then tied it up about five minutes later.
Tom Buston headed in a corner kick by Matheus Saramento midway through the second half to make it 2-1. Buston then found the back of the Clipper net, unassisted, with a little over five minutes left.
Newburyport made things interesting scoring with just under a minute left but the Pioneers were able to hold on.
Pioneer goalie Dante Gesamondo had a career-high 15 saves.
“Our defense was great and Dante was terrific,” said Munroe.
The drama was a lot lower in the Pioneers previous game as they blanked guest Georgetown 4-0 on Sept. 24 to snap a two-game losing streak.
“We played well,” said Munroe, as his squad led 3-0 at the half.
Hauser, Buston, Jack Bird and Saramento all found the back of the Royals net that day.
Gesamondo had six saves to post the shutout which was his third of the season.
The next two games for the Pioneers will be at home. They face Ipswich on Friday and Triton next Tuesday.
Both games will start at 3:45 p.m.
