WEST NEWBURY — On a beautiful, Thursday afternoon in West Newbury, the NRHS boys’ track team was able to take down a tough Pentucket squad by a score of 48-38. This was the first victory of the wedge season for the team and improved their record to 1-2.
“We had a lot of season and personal bests today,” said Hornets head coach Ryan Spinney. “The team stepped up across the board and the results speak for themselves. We are extremely proud of their effort today.”
The Hornets were led by five event winners, who set the tone for the squad for the afternoon. Those taking home victories in their events included senior captain Grayson Budny in the 55 Meter Dash (6.92), senior captain Peter Wyatt in the Shot Put (37’ 1.75”), senior captain Jack Murphy in the 600 Meter Run (1:27.9), junior Anthony Petrosino in the 2 Mile (11:20.8) and junior Aidan Nadeau in the 1 Mile (4:44.4).
“Our veterans really stepped up and led the way today,” said Spinney. “Peter had his best toss of the season and inspired the rest of the shot put crew to continue their season dominance. Jack and Grayson did what they do, which is to lead by example, and Anthony and Aidan had fantastic races where they got out to leads and never looked back.”
The Hornets were the benefactors of six 2nd place finishers to snag 18 points on the day. Those efforts included junior Alex Carpenter in the 55 Meter Dash (7.11), junior Spencer Beane in the 300 Meter Dash (39.7), sophomore Brady Miller in the 1000 Meter Run (3:03.2), sophomore Rocco Tammaro in the 2 Mile Run (11:36.9), junior Casey O’Connor in the Shot Put (36’ 4”) and junior Jake Mikulski in the High Jump (5’ 4”).
“Alex knew he needed to come up big in the 55 today, and he stepped up with a strong second place,” said Spinney. “Spencer has been so consistent as our top 300 runner this year and he was in a real battle in his race today. Casey and Jake have been getting stronger each meet and are really contributing a lot to the team. Brady and Rocco have been so impressive this season as they are young but have worked very hard every day. They have done a great job.”
Rounding out the Hornet scorers were third place finishers junior Jake Mikulski in the 55 Meter Hurdles (9.7), sophomore Nick Fabrizio in the 1 Mile (5:00.2), sophomore Nathan Miller in the 1000 Meter Run (3:06.5), junior Nick Ciardiello in the Shot Put (35’ 10.5”) and senior captain Jack Murphy in the High Jump (5’ 4”).
“Nick Fabrizio had the race of his life today in the mile,” said Spinney. “He had a huge PR and ran such a smart race. Nick Ciardello has been very consistent in the shot put circle all season for us. Jake, Nathan and Jack have also been getting stronger in their respective events. This was a total team effort for a win today.”
