NORTH READING — In a season of many firsts, the NRHS girls’ indoor track and field team had a great eight weeks.
Despite the restrictions and modifications to the sport and the fact that the season was truncated from its typical 12-14 weeks to an abbreviated 8-9 weeks the girls track and field team persevered. With only four meets scheduled by the league in the last four weeks of the season, the coaches and athletes took advantage of four weeks of training in order to prepare for the season.
The result was a 2-1-1 season record, beating Triton and Ipswich in convincing fashion, tying league champion Newburyport and losing by one point to a perennially strong Pentucket.
Senior captains Katelyn Gorgenyi, Marykate Lundy, Ashley Rabbitt, Kerri-Ann Sexton and Julia Thorstad led the way. Juniors Madison DiNapoli, Annie MacLellan, Emma Mini and Ella Monteleone were among the top point scorers as were 9th and 10th graders Karleigh Budny, Kayla Budny, Annalise Butler, Kayla Hannan, Ella Mazzei, Ava McIntyre and Madison Vant.
In the final meet of the season held at home on Thursday, April 15, the Hornets celebrated senior day with a victory against Ipswich 61-21.
Events winners included the following: Katelyn Gorgenyi (55 Meter Hurdles), Kayla Budny (55 Meters), Annalise Butler (One Mile), Julia Thorstad (600 Meters), Annie MacLellan (1000 Meters), Samantha Magner (Two Mile), Emma Mini (Shot Put), Ella Monteleone (High Jump) and the 4×400 Meter Relay made up of Kayla Hannan, Annie MacLellan, Annalise Butler and Julia Thorstad.
On to spring track. The season starts Monday, April 26. Track is back!
