NORTH READING — On Thursday, April 15, the North Reading boys’ indoor track team finished their wedge season campaign on the outdoor track as they defeated a strong Ipswich squad, 50-36 on Senior Day.
“This was a great team win,” said head coach Ryan Spinney. “Everyone stepped up and chipped in. We ended the season with a number of high end performances and lots of happy athletes. It was a very special day.”
Break out the brooms
Leading the way for the Hornets was the shot put squad of Nick Ciardiello, Peter Wyatt and Jack Fischer. Along with Casey O’Connor, the shot put squad accomplished a spectacular rare feat: They took places 1, 2 and 3 in every single meet to sweep the season points for the event.
“This is a testament to the hard work that group has put in all season. Coaches Andrew Falanga and Thom Ledoux have developed a strong training method and have helped these athletes achieve something incredible. A truly impressive and historic feat, one well deserved and earned,” said Spinney.
Chippin’ in
The Hornets won seven of the 10 events on the day, including sweeping the Shot Put, the 55 Meter Dash and the High Jump events. The day started with Jake Mikulski taking the victory in the 55 Meter Hurdles in a time of 8.98. Garrett Butler took 3rd in the event with a time of 9.12, a mere .01 seconds ahead of the 4th place finisher.
Following the Hurdles, the 55 Meter Dash trio of Grayson Budny, Alex Carpenter and Quinn Riesenberg took all three places with times of 6.95, 7.05 and 7.13 respectively.
Spencer Beane in the 300 Meter Dash set a season best time of 38.4 and he took home first place for his efforts as well.
“Our sprint and hurdle group have worked very hard this season and the results speak for themselves. Coaches Pintzopoulos, MacLellan and Rocco have done a tremendous job helping our athletes fine tune their form and starting mechanics. I am very excited how this translates to the spring track performances on the horizon,” said Spinney.
The High Jump group of Jake Mikulski, Jack Murphy, Blake Miller and Quinn Riesenberg, swept places 1, 2 and 3 for points and 4th for good measure, as they jumped 5’ 2”, 5’ 2”, 5’ 0” and 5’ 0” respectively.
“Coach Joe Davis has been instrumental at helping our athletes improve their technique in the High Jump and it has certainly been noticed,” said Spinney. “A solid finish to the season for this group with their performance today.”
In the distance events, Aidan Nadeau took home 1st place in the mile in a time of 4:52 and not far behind in 3rd place was Nick Fabrizio in a time of 5:04.9.
In the 2 Mile, Anthony Petrosino and Rocco Tammaro were a strong 1-2 punch as they took home the top two places with times of 11:23.9 and 11:58.7, respectively. In the 600 Meter Run, Jack Murphy and Henry Pelmas took 2nd and 3rd overall as they clocked 1:27.8 and 1:39.5, respectively.
“Our mid-distance and distance runners had a great finish to their seasons today. Lots of solid races and strong efforts across our team. I have been so fortunate to work with such a wonderful group of athletes who work hard and are just great kids,” said Spinney.
The spring track season begins on Monday, April 26 as the Hornets will look to be major competitors in the CAL once again.
