LYNNFIELD — In their final meet of the season, the Lynnfield High boy’s indoor track and field team lost 63-22 to visiting Newburyport on April 15 at Lynnfield Middle School (all of the meets were outdoors due to the COVID-19 pandemic). With that defeat, the Pioneers ended the season at 1-4 overall.
Lynnfield head coach Christine Smith knew her team was in trouble when she saw the size of the Clippers roster.
“Their roster is more than double what we have,” she pointed out, about her alma mater. “They also have several great distance runners.”
The Clippers, who finished at 3-2, compete in the Cape Ann League Kinney (large) Division while the Pioneers are in the CAL Baker (small) as this was Lynnfield’s lone crossover meet of the season.
Senior captain John Briggs led the Pioneers with a pair of wins. He captured first in the shot put and 300 meters. Fellow senior co-captain Mike Madden was first in the 1,000 meters.
Although it is not an officially scored event, senior Cole Trainor was able to have a personal-best long jump of 19 feet.
Lynnfield went 1-3 in the CAL Baker as they finished in fourth place.
Later this week, the league coaches will be selecting their All-Star teams.
