Beat Watertown in first round of D3N tourney

NORTH READING — The NRHS girls’ tennis team closed the regular season with an historic victory over CAL and state powerhouse Lynnfield – their first win against the Pioneers in over 30 years.

First doubles was victorious as Lexi Licciardi and Soultana Tsaparlis won an epic match 5-7,6-3,10-8 in a super tiebreaker.

At second singles, Elizabeth Grant won a tight two setter 6-3, 7-5.

Alyssa Bradley and Chloe Florez won in a three set marathon as well at second doubles 7-5, 2-6, 10-8.

At first singles, Ava Czarnota lost 6-3, 6-1. Gina Campagna fell 6-2, 6-3 at third singles.

Sweep Watertown 5-0

On June 18, the Hornets opened the state tournament in style by walloping the Watertown Raiders 5-0 in the first round of the Division 3 North Sectional.

Ava Czarnota took her match 6-1, 6-2 at first singles. Grant won her 11th match of the season at second singles 6-4, 6-3 and Campagna didn’t drop a game at third singles 6-0, 6-0.

Tsaparlis and Licciardi easily swept also without dropping a game 6-0, 6-0. Bradley and Florez quickly took the first set 6-1 and won the second 7-5.

The 8th seeded Hornets battled hard against top-seeded Manchester-Essex in the quarterfinals on Monday but were edged 3-2.
