READING — The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) said it will be conducting overnight pavement marking operations on Route 28 (Main Street) from Salem Street to the Reading/North Reading town line over the next two weeks.

Local motorists should seek alternate routes whenever possible. Portions of some detours listed below will require traveling through North Reading.

The work began Tuesday, July 6 and continues through Friday, July 9. It will resume on Sunday, July 11 through Friday, July 16, during overnight hours from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning.

A minimum of one travel lane in each direction will be maintained at all times. The temporary lane closures and occasional detours are necessary to allow the contractor to safely and effectively install roadway pavement markings.

The pavement marking operations will require detours as follows:

Northbound traffic

• Detour No. 1: Right on Salem Street, left on Pearl Street, left on Franklin Street to Main Street (all streets in Reading)

• Detour No. 2: Right on Franklin Street in Reading, left on Haverhill Street in Reading, crossing into North Reading, left on Chestnut Street in North Reading, left on Park Street in North Reading to Main Street in North Reading.

Southbound traffic

• Detour No. 1: Left on Park Street in North Reading, right on Chestnut Street in North Reading, right on Haverhill Street in North Reading crossing into Reading, right on Franklin Street in Reading to Main Street in Reading.

• Detour No. 2: Right on Franklin Street, left on Grove Street, left on Lowell Street (Route 129) to Main Street (all in Reading)

Appropriate signage, law enforcement details and messaging will be in place to guide drivers through the work area.

Drivers who are traveling through the affected areas should expect delays, reduce their speed and use caution.

All scheduled work is weather-dependent and subject to change without notice.

This work is part of a $5.6M resurfacing and improvement project along this section of Route 28 (Main Street) in Reading.
