MELROSE — As part of the Complete Streets Program, Melrose has installed temporary bike lanes on Main St. from Mt. Vernon St. to Sylvan St., while making adjustments to the parking layout along Main Street.
This temporary pilot program, as currently marked out, is slated to last until this portion of the road is paved later this year. At the end of the program, the City will distribute a survey to solicit additional feedback from the community to determine the next steps, as well as conduct follow-up public forums to discuss the results. The final Complete Streets design will take all public comments into consideration.
The Department of Public Works hosted a public meeting on July 21 in collaboration with the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) and the Melrose Pedestrian-Bicycle Committee to discuss the plans for the pilot.
The current design features bike lanes on both sides of the road, with a protected lane on the northbound side, meaning cyclists ride between parked cars and the curb.
This pilot project aims to provide a safer design for all users, provide connectivity between Melrose Center and Malden, and improve access to the Oak Grove MBTA station for pedestrians and cyclists.
