WAKEFIELD — The Sweetser Lecture Series Advisory Committee announces a timeframe change for its 2022-2023 season.
Due to the uncertainty of the impact of this winter’s flu season, COVID-19, the Delta variant and the impending Omicron variant, the advisory committee voted unanimously in November to move what would normally be a spring 2022 series to a fall 2022 series.
The popular series, which started in 1885 with a $10,000 bequest from Cornelius Sweetser, was revived in 1985. The series has thrived since then (with the exception of the recent two-season hiatus); and as this holiday season lifts spirits, so will the fall 2022 series.
The committee is in the throes of selecting its guest lecturers from a list of prospective speakers, many of whom have sent requests to speak at the lecture series. The committee is in the enviable position of having a roster of three speakers solidified by January.
(The advisory committee regrets that tickets will not be available for purchase as Christmas gifts this year, but tickets will be available for gifts in the spring for those months’ numerous special occasions.)
As stipulated in the1881 will of benefactor Cornelius Sweetser, the lectures would “improve and elevate the public mind.” At the end of each lecture season, and as also stipulated in Sweetser’s will, the SLS Advisory Committee donates its net proceeds to local charities that benefit Wakefield’s neediest citizens.
Watch for announcement of who the Sweetser Lecture Series speakers will be, and how each will focus on lifting our spirits – a much-needed elixir — in 2022!
