Melrose dominates Wilmington, 108-27

MELROSE—The Melrose High girl’s outdoor track team started their season with a bang, with a dominating 108-27 victory over league rival Wilmington to start their season off at 1-0, while also qualifying a number of athletes for statewide competition.

Melrose swept a number of events, including the triple jump, 800m and 100mh, and took the top two spots in most other events. Qualifying for states were Anne Morrison in two events: long jump and high jump; Lucia Siede in long jump and Brooke Barriss in the 100m dash.

Coach Shannon Kane was thrilled with the win. “We’ve been preparing for this meet for three weeks, keeping in mind that Wilmington is a very good team. I think that having our experienced upperclassmen all step up as leaders and having the right mentality going into the meet were the two things that really made this win possible.”

Melrose swept the 1-2 spots in the 400m hurdles thanks to Bridget McDonnell and Sarina Peters; the one mile by Alex Cotugno and Holly Moore; the high jump between Anne Morrison and Lucia Siede and the two mile behind Tara O’Shea and Katharine Duffy.

Melrose dominated Wilmington in the 100 hurdles with Jenna Delmastro placing first and behind her was Mia Catalini and Caroline Fogarty. they swept the 800m behind the legs of Bridget McDonnell, Kate Bidgood and Lily Fitzgerald. Other first place wins came from Molly Clark in shot put and disc, Melrose’s 4×100 and 4×400 relay teams, Liz Perella in the 200, Brooke Barriss in the triple jump, Emma Lynch-Galvin in the 400, Katie Donovan in the javelin.

Melrose looks to make it a winning streak when they host Burlington on Thursday (post deadline).
