World War II veteran, prisoner of war, civil engineer

Romano-obit-webLYNNFIELD — Albert “Al” Romano of Lynnfield and formerly of Revere passed away on Sunday, February 19, surrounded by family.
He was the beloved husband of 66 years to Gloria L. (Polcari). He was the loving son of the late Louis and Josephine (Zolla). He was the devoted father of Denise Ratti and husband Donald of Woburn, and Diane Falite and husband Ronald of Lynnfield. He was the dear brother of Edith Crowley and her late husband Bill of Middleton, Janet Prochilo and her late husband John of Middleton, Frank Romano and wife Carmella of Florida, brother in law to Catherine and Donna Romano, and his late brothers Louis, Arthur, and Joseph “Buster” Romano. He was the cherished grandfather of Melissa Cauger and her husband Michael, Steven Ratti, Kristal Markiewicz and her husband Craig, Stephanie Falite, Courtney Doucette and her husband Christopher, and dear great grandfather of Michael, Miranda, Zachary and Jada. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Al proudly served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, was a prisoner of war survivor, in Romania, part of the Ploesti Air Raid, and was a part of the Air Offensive Europe, Naples-Foggia, Normandy, Air Combat, Sicily, and Northern France battles and campaigns. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart, Unit Citation, Distinguished Flying Cross, European African Middle Eastern service Medal.
Albert worked as a civil engineer for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in Boston before retiring and opening up his own firm Gloral Associates where he worked until his passing.
Al would take his entire family on vacation every year. His family meant everything to him and he would do anything for them.
Albert was a member of the Knights of Columbus of Revere, the Crystal Community Club in Wakefield and Immaculate Conception Holy Name Society in Revere. He will be sorely missed by his family and friends.
His funeral will be from the Paul Buonfiglio & Sons-Bruno Funeral Home, 128 Revere St., Revere, on Friday February 24, at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass in St. Anthony’s Church at 10 a.m.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited.
Visitation will be held Thursday, February 23, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Internment Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden.
