VALLEY CENTER, California — Allen W. Scarpello, 73, of Valley Center, Calif., passed away on May 6, 2020, after a two-year battle with colon cancer.  Born and raised in Wakefield, Mass. he was the son of the late Doris and William Scarpello.

He is survived by his two sons, David Scarpello and his wife Jennifer of Wakefield and Aaron Scarpello and his wife Amy of Salem, N.H., sister Gail Scarpello Betz of Bainbridge Island, Wash., niece Mallory Betz Martini, nephews Matthew Jarvis and Nathan Jarvis. He also leaves behind six grandchildren – Nicholas, Anna, Aiden, Ryan, John, and Stella. He was preceded in death by his sister Marsha Scarpello Jarvis in 2001.

Allen graduated from Wakefield High School in 1964 and said his favorite job was being a lobster fisherman out of Salem Harbor. In 1980 he moved to California where he lived in the Los Angeles area and ultimately settled in Valley Center where he ran his own manufacturing company.

Allen lived an adventurous life and had a deep love of animals and the great outdoors. He was a fishing and boating enthusiast wherever he lived, and he especially loved taking his boat down to Mexico in the pursuit of marlin.

In his retirement years he returned to a childhood hobby of raising homing pigeons, and up to the very end there was little he enjoyed more than driving a handful of his best fliers 75 miles out and then timing how quickly they made it back home. His other great joy was sitting on his porch in the afternoons with his longtime partner, Becky Ellison, quietly enjoying the beautiful California weather and what he called “family time.”

Allen will be missed by everyone who knew him. Services will be postponed pending the coronavirus guidelines.
