Warriors turn in some fine performances at M.L. swim meet

WALTHAM — The Wakefield Memorial High girls’ swim team has typically one of if not the smallest rosters in the Middlesex League. But for the third year in a row, the Warriors have crowned an individual champion at the M.L. Championship meet which held was last Thursday at Bentley University.

Freshman Chris Anastasiades was crowned the 200 individual medley as he clocked in at 2:13.4. Anastasiades also placed second in the 100 butterfly as he swam a time of 1:01.73.

Anastasiades was one of several Warrior swimmers who placed among the top 16 in the meet and scored at least a point. That contributed to Wakefield finishing seventh in the team scoring with 135 points.

The 200 medley relay team placed 10th overall in a time of 2:15.40. The four swimmers included Anastasiades, Erin Lucey, Cecelia Colliton and Caroline Sweeney.

Sweeney, a sophomore, earned a 16th place finish in the 200 freestyle in a time of 2:16.51.

Also scoring points in the 100 butterfly were seniors Madison Guay and Taylor Guarino. Guay clocked in at 1:05.54 for fifth place and Guarino posted a 15th place time of 1:14.95.

Wakefield secured fifth place in the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:49.93. The four Warriors included Guay, Pecjo, Guarino and Anastasiades.

In the 100 breaststroke, Guay and Pecjo captured seventh and 14th overall with times of 1:15.42 and 1:20.52.

The Warriors captured seventh in the final event, the 400 freestyle relay. The team of Pecjo, Guarino, Sweeney and Guay clocked in at 4:12.09

Wakefield also had many fine performances among the non-point scorers.

In the 200 medley relay, Wakefield’s B team posted a time of 2:29.43. The four swimmers included Erin Lomasney, Jessica Conley, Cecelia Colliton and Caitlyn Collins.

Three Warriors took part in the 200 freestyle. Junior Brigid Scanlon, sophomore Kelley O’Connell and junior Julia Hanley placed 27th, 32nd and 34th with times of 2:29.77, 2:43.66 and 2:48.07.

Nicole Pecjo, a senior, just missed scoring a point in the 200 individual medley as she finished 17th at 2:34.63. Colliton and O’Connell, both sophomores, finished in 25th and 30th place with times of 2:48.81 and 3:05.89.

Wakefield had many entries in the 50 freestyle. They included freshman David Rojevsky (44th, 29.52 seconds), senior Victoria Trinagle (58th, 30.35 seconds), freshman Conley (71st, 30.88 seconds), sophomore Anya Nardone (93rd, 32.07 seconds), Hanley (120th, 33.88 seconds), senior Lomasney (134th, 34.67 seconds), freshman Bridget Glendye (141st, 35.38 seconds), junior Collins (151st, 36.38 seconds), junior Ashleigh Farrow (36.89 seconds), senior Lucey (157th, 37.39 seconds), sophomore Abigail Cunningham (166th, 38.26 seconds), junior Meghan Pescatore (172nd, 40.04 seconds) and sophomore Samantha Nimblett (175th, 42.11 seconds).

Farrow also swam in the 100 butterfly and placed 29th at 1:34.98.

In the 100 freestyle, Sweeney, Tringale, Conley and junior Mikayla Foley finished 20th, 28th, 30th and 33rd with times of 1:02.73, 1:08.63, 1:08.89 and 1:13.27.

Colliton and Scanlon were Wakefield’s two swimmers in the 500 freestyle which was held Wednesday at Belmont High School. Colliton was 27th at 6:45.50 and Scanlon claimed 29th with a time of 6:55.78.

Wakefield had a B team entered in the 200 freestyle relay and posted a time of 2:07.70. The Warriors also had a C team which was entered in the event. The team of Nardone, Foley, Hanley and Scanlon swam a time of 2:17.50.

Foley, Lomasney and Nardone grabbed 30th, 33rd and 35th in the 100 backstroke with times of 1:25.95, 1:28.68 and 1:31.07.

In the 100 breaststroke, Collins and Lucey took 26th and 29th with times of 1:32.43 and 1:34.67.

Next up for the Warriors is the North Sectional Meet which will be held on Saturday at 4:15 p.m. at MIT.
