Library clerk was active in church and civic affairs

LYNNFIELD — Avis Madeline Evans, 88, died Monday, April 17, 2017 at the Sunrise Assisted Living Center in Lynnfield with her family by her side.
Born in Brockton on July 30, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Harold Joseph and Amy (Bergstrom) Holmstrand.
Mrs. Evans was raised in Brockton and was a graduate of Brockton High School, Class of 1945. She later graduated from Boston University, Class of 1949. After moving to Lynnfield in 1967, she was very involved in the town and was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, a friend of the Lynnfield Senior Center, as well as the Lynnfield Public Library, where she had worked as a clerk for a number of years. Mrs. Evans was a talented knitter who belonged to many groups and was very proud of her Swedish heritage.
She was the beloved wife of the late Frank H. Evans. She was the loving mother of Christine E. Gehret and her husband Joseph Gehret, Jr. of North Reading. She was the adoring grandmother of Joseph Gehret and his wife Johanna, Andrew Gehret and Meriam Gehret and her fiancé James Silva. She is also survived by her great-grandson, Joseph A. Gehret.
A graveside service will be held at the Forest Hill Cemetery, Lynnfield on Friday, April 21 at 10 a.m. followed by a Memorial Service at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 127 Summer St, Lynnfield at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to the Lynnfield Senior Center, 525 Salem St., Lynnfield MA 01940; the Friends of the Lynnfield Library, 18 Summer St., Lynnfield MA 01940 or to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 127 Summer St., Lynnfield MA 01940.
Arrangements are in the care of the McDonald Funeral Home, Wakefield.
