MELROSE — The first day of school for Melrose Public School children entering kindergarten through grade 12 is Tuesday, Sept. 1. Melrose Public Schools are closed on Friday, Sept. 4, and Monday, Sept. 7, in observance of Labor Day.

School hours

Elementary (K-5)

The school day begins at: 8:15 a.m. and ends at 2:22 p.m.

On TUESDAY, Sept. 1 (only):

• All students in grades 1-5 will meet their teachers at 8:05 a.m.in the designated area. They will line up by class and enter the building at 8:10 a.m.

• Kindergarten students will meet their teachers at 8:25 a.m. in the designated area. They will line up by class and enter the building at 8:30 a.m.

• The purpose of the later start time for Kindergartners is to help ease the transition on the first day of school for our youngest students.

On WEDNESDAY and THURSDAY, Sept. 2 and 3:

• Teachers will meet all K-5 students in the designated area at 8:05 a.m. and enter the building at 8:10 a.m. The school day ends at 2:22 p.m.

Middle School (Grades 6-8)

The school day begins at 7:40 a.m. and ends at 2:05 p.m.

On TUESDAY, Sept. 1 (only):

• All students in grade 6 should report to the auditorium.

• All students in grade 7 and 8 should report to their homerooms.

• Homeroom and Team assignments will be mailed home over the summer.

High School (Grades 9-12)

Grade 9 and New Student Orientation

TUESDAY, Aug. 25, 9 a.m. to noon

Location: Melrose High School

All incoming ninth graders and students new to MHS are expected to attend. The program will be led by the Assistant Principals and student leaders. Students will have the opportunity to tour the building and familiarize themselves with the expectations of MHS.   Attendance at New Student Orientation is essential to the success of incoming students.

Grades 9-12

• TUESDAY, Sept. 1 (only):

The school day begins at 7:45 a.m. and ends at 2:11 p.m.

• All students in grades 9-12 should report to their “advisory” classroom at 7:45 a.m.

• Lists of “advisory” classrooms will be posted in the main lobby of the high school and staff will be available to assist students.

Early Childhood Center at the Franklin School

Great Start Welcome Back Parent Night is Wednesday, Sept. 2 from 6:30-8 p.m. Sneak Peek meet and greet for students and an adult family member is Thursday, Sept. 3 from 9-11 a.m. All programs will begin the week of Sept. 8 on the weekday designated by program type. Welcome letters with specific start of school information will be mailed in August. Contact the Early Childhood Center at 781-979-2260 with questions. Limited spaces are still available in certain programming options.

After School Programming – Education Stations

Grades K-5

• The first day of Education Stations, the Melrose Public Schools after school enrichment program is Tuesday, Sept. 1.

• The Program will not operate on Friday, Sept. 4, or on Monday, Sept. 7, as schools are closed in observance of Labor Day.

• The deadline for securing placement and the early discount rate is Aug. 5.

• Pre-registration is required and information/registration links can be found on the Education Stations Information Page – https://melroseschools.com/families/education-stations.

• Pre-School, Pre-K at the Early Childhood Center

• The first day of after school programming at the Franklin ECC will be Tuesday, Sept. 8. Early Bird, before school programming, will begin the following day, on Sept. 9.

• The deadline for securing placement and the early discount rate is Aug. 5.

• Pre-registration is required and information/registration links can be found on the Education Stations Information Page – https://melroseschools.com/families/education-stations.

Late registrations, after Aug. 5, will be accepted only on a space-available basis and require five business days to process before children may attend the after school program.
