Lived life to the fullest, active in Trinity Evangelical Church

READING — Bernice “Bunny” (Miller) Gomes of Reading passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Nov. 26, 2015 at the age of 96.

She is the daughter of the late Norwood A. and the late Florabelle J. (Smith) Miller.

She was the beloved wife of the late John Gomes and the devoted mother of Karen Vars and her husband Arthur of Reading, John D. Gomes and his wife Barbara of Townsend and Judith M. Erickson of Cambridge.

Bernice was the cherished sister of Alison Burke of Melrose, the late Barbara Athern and the late Phyllis Brennan, her identical twin sister.

She is also survived by her treasured niece and nephew, Lesley Ormonde and her husband Henry of Wayland, Ronald Brennan and his wife Leslie of Beverly, Jacob Burke of Berlin, Jordan Burke and his wife Kate of Cambridge and Alexander Burke of Melrose. She is the proud Nana to seven grandchildren and three great–grandchildren.

She was the dear friend of Mary E. Baldwin of Reading.

Bunny was blessed with many other precious friendships over her 96 years. Bunny graduated from Melrose High School in 1939. She worked at the Cambridge Court House in the Department of the Registry of Deeds where she met her husband John.

She was employed at Winchester Hospital as a Unit Clerk and later, in the department of Medical Records retiring in the early 1970s.

She volunteered at Boston Regional Hospital in Administration for several years until the hospital closed.

Bunny was a woman of strong faith in the Lord. Over the years she was a member of the Green Street Baptist Church in Melrose, The Baptist Church in Reading and the Baptist Church in North Reading, now Trinity Evangelical. She taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School, participated in couples groups, Bible Studies, prayer groups and “Keenagers.” She loved life and lived it to the fullest right up to the time of her death.

Funeral services were held at the Trinity Evangelical Church in North Reading on Wednesday. Burial was at Puritan Lawn Memorial Park in Peabody.
