MELROSE — The Lynnfield-North Reading co-operative wrestling team swept a quad meet against Triton, Melrose and Southwick-Toland on Saturday, Jan. 17 at Melrose High School.

The Black and Gold (16-2) defeated Triton 49-25 during the quad meet. The victory will ensure the grapplers will at least share a portion of the Cape Ann League title.

Sophomore Will Glover (106 lbs.) defeated his opponent by fall in 45 seconds. Senior captain Joe Morse (113 lbs.) pinned his opponent in 2:41. Junior Max Whyman (126 lbs.) defeated Jared Durkin, who along with Whyman is ranked among Division 3’s top 10 wrestlers by www.masswrestling, by a 5-2 decision.

Senior Jake Mullin-Bernstein (132 lbs.) pinned his opponent in 1:19. Senior captain Lucas Pascucci (138 lbs.) clinched the victory for the Black and Gold after defeating his opponent by fall in 4:53. Senior captain Dominic Monzione (145 lbs.) won his match by forfeit.

Senior Vitaliy Andrusyshyn (195 lbs.) pinned Alec Moffat, a returning sectional place finisher, in 2:47. Senior Brandon Troisi (285 lbs.) defeated his counterpart by a 9-1 decision.

Black and Gold head coach Craig Stone said he’s thrilled the grapplers pulled out a hard fought win over Triton.

“Looking back, key pivotal matches were at 195 (Andrusyshyn) and 126 (Whyman),” said Stone. “If those matches don’t go our way, it might have been a different story.”

Defeats Melrose

The Black and Gold crushed Melrose 42-28.

Melrose jumped out to an early 16-0 after the Red Raiders won the match’s first three weight classes. The grapplers won the next seven matches and took taking a commanding 36-16 lead. The Black and Gold kept rolling and never looked back.

Glover defeated his opponent by forfeit. Morse pinned his counterpart in 2:24. Freshman Andrew DiPietro (120 lbs.) won his match by forfeit. Whyman defeated his opponent by fall in 2:55. Mullin-Bernstein defeated his opponent by a 7-0 decision.

Dominic Monzione pinned his opponent in 58 seconds. Senior Nick Wilkinson (220 lbs.) defeated his opponent by a 5-2 decision. Troisi defeated his opponent by fall in three minutes.

Dismantles Southwick

The Black and Gold pounded Southwick-Toland 66-9.

Glover defeated his opponent by fall in 36 seconds. Sophomore Aaron Gautreau (113 lbs.) pinned his opponent in 22 seconds. Pascucci defeated his counterpart by fall in 1:53. Dominic Monzione won his match by forfeit. Josh Marcinowski pinned his opponent in 1:59.

Junior Zack Monzione (160 lbs.) pinned his opponent in 41 seconds. Junior Max Robert (3:55) defeated his counterpart by fall in 3:55. Bradley pinned his opponent in 29 seconds. Andrusyshyn defeated his opponent by fall in 29 seconds. Wilkinson and Troisi won their respective matches by forfeit.

Upcoming matches

The Black and Gold host Peabody on Friday, Jan. 23, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The grapplers will host Gloucester, Malden and Billerica in a quad meet on Saturday, Jan. 24, beginning at 10 a.m. The Black and Gold will be recognizing North Reading Morse, Mullin-Bernstein and Bradley, who will be wrestling their last dual meet at home.
