NORTH READING — The Cape Ann League coaches met recently to name their All-Star teams and three members of the North Reading High squad were selected.
Emma Borland made the CAL First-Team All-Stars for the first time. The senior goalie made 162 saves and had a save percentage of 46.6.
“She is probably the best goalie we have had in the 17 years we have had a program,” said Hornets head coach Matt Costello. “She had a remarkable year and kept us in a lot of games.”
Borland, who will be going to Sacred Heart in September, was also named to the Eastern Mass. Girls Lacrosse Coaches Association as a Division 2 Second-Team All-Star.
Two Hornets made the CAL Second-Team All-Stars: Brianne Slattery and Eviana MacInnis. It is the first time on the team for both girls.
Slattery, a sophomore attacker-midfielder, led the team in points with 38 as she had 25 goals and 13 assists. She also led the Hornets in draw controls with 51.
“She is a talented, skilled player and I am happy that we will have her another two years,” said Costello of Slattery.
MacInnis, senior a midfielder, had 13 points with 12 goals and one assist. She also caused 21 turnovers.
“She was crucial with her ball security,” said Costello, about the co-captain. “She stepped up for us this year.”
MacInnis will be attending Tampa University this fall.
Along with Borland and MacInnis, the Hornets will be losing seven other seniors to graduation: Morgan Craig (attacker), Kiley Rosenthal (midfielder- defenseman), Brianna Guidebeck (defenseman), Amelia Milano (defenseman), Clara Sullivan (defenseman), Rees Lord (midfielder) and Marykate Lundy (defenseman).
Lord and Lundy were the two other captains.
“The seniors did a great job of treating teammates with respect,” said Costello, whose team also won the CAL Team Sportsmanship Award. “They set a positive tone with the younger players.”
North Reading finished at 4-10 overall as they lost to Newburyport, 22-5, in the first round of the Division 2 North state tournament on June 21.
However, the team did record its first ever playoff win on June 19 when they beat guest Dracut 11-10 in the preliminary round.
“That was the best part of the season,” said Costello, who just completed his third year at the helm.
The Hornets were 3-9 in league play coming in fourth place in the CAL Kinney Division.
Next season, the team is slated to have 12 players back.
“We have a lot of players back on offense but have some big shoes to fill on defense and in goal,” Costello remarked.
