WAKEFIELD — After the crossover portion of the schedule, the Wakefield Memorial High boys’ cross country team showed that it can not only compete with the larger schools, but also win against those clubs as well.

Wakefield captured seven of the top 10 places in yesterday’s crossover meet against Woburn as it prevailed by a 21-39 score at the Shaun Beasley course.

The Warriors are 1-1 against the two Middlesex League Liberty division teams. The loss came against M.L. Liberty division juggernaut Lexington and that was a close meet.

As for yesterday, the Warriors and Tanners ran under hot and humid conditions on a late September afternoon.

Matt Greatorex, a junior, won the three mile race in a time of 16:27 as he was well ahead of the Woburn runner who took second.

The race for second and third was close with Woburn taking second at 16:40. Ryan Sullivan, a senior captain, placed third for Wakefield as he clocked in at 16:43.

Tom Lucey, a junior, raced to a fourth place finish at 17:11 ahead of Woburn’s second runner.

The Warriors’ depth was on full display after that as they secured sixth, seventh and eighth overall.

Sophomore Rohan Singhvi, junior Riley Brackett and junior Robert Shaw posted times of 17:31, 17:35 and 17:39.

The Tanners’ third runner came in ninth at 17:56 before Wakefield’s seventh runner crossed the finish line for 10th overall. Mike Frezza, a senior, timed in at 18:14.

While the top seven varsity runners did extremely well, the rest of Wakefield’s lineup, including the JV runners performed well under the hot and humid conditions as well.

Wakefield took 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th in the race as well behind the efforts of sophomore Derrick Scheeler, freshman Tanner Jellison, senior Shahnawaz Anwar, sophomore Billy Stevens and sophomore Casey Brackett. They ran times of 18:21, 18:31, 18:32, 18:37 and 18:46.

Justin McGonagle, a senior, and Derryn Langlois, a sophomore, placed 17th and 20th overall as they clocked in at 18:59 and 19:37.
