LYNNFIELD — The boys’ basketball went 2-1 last week, bringing the Pioneers’ overall record this season to 8-3.

The Pioneers hung on for a thrilling 55-54 overtime victory over Amesbury Jan. 15.

Senior captain Brendan Sullivan led the Pioneers with 22 points and five steals.

“Tonight was a real gut check,” said Pioneers head coach Scott MacKenzie. “It was great to see the collective backbone of our team in the late minutes of the game and throughout overtime. Brendan was just terrific for us on both ends of the floor, an outstanding effort.”

Crushes Ipswich

The Pioneers crushed Ipswich 65-46 Jan.18.

Junior Louis Ellis led the Pioneers with 21 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Billy Arsenault had 15 points and three assists. Junior Mike Carangelo had nine points and eight rebounds.

“This was an extremely sloppy game played by both teams,” said MacKenzie. “Multiple turnovers. Poor decision-making. To be honest, we got away with some things today that Ipswich could have capitalized on. Needless to say, this will be the focus of practice this week: Taking care of the ball.”

Conquered by Generals

The Pioneers began last week falling 50-44 to Hamilton-Wenham Jan. 12.

Ellis led the Pioneers with 15 points and eight rebounds.

“We were outcoached and outplayed tonight,” said MacKenzie. “It’s that simple. Hamilton-Wenham capitalized on the four or five defensive breakdowns that we had throughout the game, which is a sign of a good team. Honestly, I just have to do a better job putting us in the best possible position to score points. It’s been a real struggle for a while now.”

Upcoming games
