MELROSE — Last season the Melrose Red Raider soccer team fought an uphill battle to secure wins. They were a young team, up against some tough Middlesex League talent. This season, those underclassmen return one year older and more experienced, which means the only place for the Red Raiders to go is up.

For Melrose coach Dean Serino, the most important thing about his players is how coachable they are. “These are great kids, who have the best approach to the game and really focus on the team aspect of it,” he says.

Leading the team as captains are seniors Vien Pham and Ryan McDermott. Both players bring a much needed leadership role to the team, having played a number of years for Serino. “Vien is an excellent player, he plays club ball outside school and it shows.” McDermott, meanwhile, is described by Serino as “a tough player,” who will be counted on to do some damage in the midfield.

Among other returning players are senior Marco Garofolo on offense, who Serino notes is the team’s scoring target, and players such as Drew Botto, Joe Brach and Charlie Pzegeo. At the net, returning goalie Connor Locke will bring skill on defense.

On Tuesday, Melrose hosted Belmont at home and fought to a close 1-0 loss. Melrose nearly tied things up with a final breakaway that was halted by a game-ending horn. According to Serino, the players didn’t hang their heads. “What is important is that they were not discouraged. They had great attitudes about it. I think last year’s experience has given them insight and the chance to do the little things right. I think we will see a lot of that this year.”  Concludes Serino, “We have a chemistry that works. I’m looking forward to the season.”

Melrose will look to pick up their first win when they host Arlington on Thursday (post deadline) at 3:30. They then hit the road to Lexington on Sept. 17 for a 3:45 p.m. game.
