Warriors blast Stoneham in Freedom division opener

WAKEFIELD — Playing a team from the Middlesex League Freedom division is exactly what the Wakefield Memorial High boys’ tennis team needed to get into the win column.

The Warriors cruised to a 4-1 triumph over Stoneham yesterday afternoon at the Dobbins Courts in the M.L. Freedom division opener.

Wakefield is now 1-3 on the season with the victory.

The Warriors won every point except at second singles. The third singles match went three sets and was the only one that went the distance.

Junior Zack Covelle faced Ryan Josephson a third singles. After losing the first set, 5-7, Covelle rallied to win the next two sets, 6-4, 6-0 to earn the point.

At first singles, James Hanron, a junior, took on Tim Russell and posted a 6-2, 6-2 triumph.

Wakefield also swept the two doubles matches.

At first doubles, the team of Matt Hoenig, a senior, and Jon Stumpf, a freshman, took on the Spartan tandem of Jake Paonessa and Nick Federico. Hoenig and Stumpf prevailed by a 6-2, 6-1 tally.

Juniors John Stanfield and Soren Helhoski were teamed at second doubles. They took on the Stoneham duo of Kevin McShane and Nick Hills. Stanford and Helhoski posted a 6-1, 6-4 win.

The only point that the Warriors didn’t win was at second singles. Noah Sellers, a junior, took on Mike Tagrousky and dropped a 4-6, 3-6 decision.

Wakefield takes on Wilmington tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 p.m. at Wilmington High School.
